hottiehairdresser10, my husband and I moved here seven years ago from the Midwest. Besides that, I grew up in New York City, so I have something to compare Vegas to.
Insofar as manners go, I agree with southrntrnzplnt. Don't expect to find them here. If you do, you can almost be assured that they are being displayed by a non-native person to Las Vegas.
It is better to have a car here. The bus situation is pretty bad. Buses are crowded, and don't appear frequently enough.
There is a lot of entertainment available. Keep in mind, though, that most--though not all--neighborhood theatres are housed within hotel/casinos. There is an abundance of restaurants, here. If you had the income to do it, you could eact at a different restaurant for dinner every night for about three years straight!
Housing is plentiful, however affordable housing isn't. There are a lot of apartments, and there are very reasonable lease options--from three months up to a year. As far as buying goes, the median cost of a single famliy home has just about doubled to over $300K. You can find homes for less, but must be willing to make some sacrifices in order to accomplish that.
You will see casinos practically everywhere you go, as they are within the communities, as well as on the Strip and in the Downtown area. Slot machines are located in the laundrymats, carryouts, grocery and drug stores, as well as the airport, when you first arrive! That's no problem, though. If you want to avoid them, you certainly may.
There are ample churches here, all over town. Yes, there are many Mormon temples all over, but there are also other denominations. (See sources below) You will be visited, however, frequently by those proselitizing their own faith. Feel free to open your door to them, or to post a sign on it discoraging solicitations.
There is a lot of hype that goes along with the deserved title "Sin City." The sin is certainly here for the taking. If you look for it, you will find it.
Just keep in mind that in addition to the "sin," there are families living here, churches, parks and recreational areas, social organizations, schools, libraries, police stations, community groups, volunteer opporunities, grocery stores, Rite Aid, Chucky Cheese, Target, Walmart, etc. The list goes on. Do you get my drift? I hope you'll be very happy here.

Just like in other major cities, most local residents never go anywhere near the tourist areas, which is where you'll find the most of what you are probably thinking as "sin." You can live in Las Vegas and never see a slot machine or a strip club or any of the other things that might concern you. Although many people work in the casino industry, there is such a wide diversity of residents - race, religion, income, beliefs, lifestyle, etc. - that you should have no problem finding people that you are comfortable with and who share your beliefs.
Oh, and Las Vegas has more churches per capita than any other major city in the country. So even if you get caught up in the "sin" you'll have plenty of places to go repent afterwards. :)

I lived there last year for less than a year. Its all I could stand. Its easy to get caught up in the "sin" lifestyle. After you've hit every casino to see what they are about...there's not much else to do. Some people can live there and survive, but I didnt like the moral and lack of manners. There are a lot of Mormons there and most are "Jack Mormons" meaning they claim the faith, but dont follow the doctrine strictly like most do.
Im from the south and was raised with manners. People there dont have them. They dont say please and thank you or yes sir or no ma'am. Not once did anyone ever hold the door for me as I entered a building behind them. It was a total culture shock for me. Im glad I experienced it, but would never be able to settle down there.
If you are strong willed and can control yourself, you may be ok. But you'll end up getting bored if you dont leave the valley from time to time. Luckily I worked for an airline when I was there and flew out as much as I could on my days off.
If you do go, make sure you drink lots of water and get a really good lotion. Your skin will dry up faster than you will ever know. Check out Henderson or Green Valley for an apartment. No matter what....living there is expensive. Most people work at a casino, and most have 2 jobs just to make it.

It's just like any other big city-
the tourists are horrible but we make our livings off them!
Lots of people work late shifts at the casinos,
lots more work all those normal jobs- mechanics, veterinarians,
accountants, just normal people.
If you aren't intersted in gambling it's a fine place to live- if you have addictive personality it can be dangerous.
If you really hate the gambling move to Boulder City, if you can afford it- it's just up the hill from Vegas/Henderson but very quiet and the ONLY town in Nevada with no gambling.

Why would you want to move to Vegas? I'm curious to know.
But just to let you know it also gets cold during the winter time. The major misconcenption about Vegas is that it's warm all year round like Los Angeles. But it's not, it gets to around 30's and 40's in the winter time. I guess it's the open space all round the city.

if your not a big gambler you'll be fine although once you've done everything there is to do there's only gambling left. all though the amount of really good show you'd be able to go to is a plus. just remember traffic sucks so live close to work. its always hot so get a job inside during the day. I love the night life.

Those that live there rarely if ever partake of events on the Strip. Once you get away from the Strip area and downtown, it's pretty much like Anycity, USA.

It's very hot over there. I wouldn't go outside in the day! Especially in the summer.
