A conscience is an innate fundamental urge to do what is good(ie the right thing). It exists as a means of ensuring the survival of living things. This basic drive to do the right thing is complimented by the feeling of pleasure one gets when one does the right thing. For example one gets a feeling of pleasure when one helps an older person with their groceries. For most human beings this basic goodness also makes it very effortful and difficult to knowingly do what is bad. This too is complimented with feelings. However, these feelings are feelings of displeasure. Thus the guilt that one feels when one lies or steals. To take it a step further this basic drive towards goodness is so strong that it impacts also, how we view the actions of others. Thus, for example, we are outraged when we see others do that which is bad. Like say, an adult hurting an innocent child. Imagine if you had no such basic goodness, you would think nothing of committing suicide or killing off an entire nation for example. Thus humans that commit such acts are few and far between and rightly viewed as being spoiled goods, crazy e.t.c

A conscience is the product of social conditioning in a normal sane person. It is the result of parents scolding and beating their children when they do "wrong," and/or positive reinforcement of their good behavior.
Now, if you were brought up to kill people who looked at you funny, and told all the time that you are a wuss if you don't stand up for yourself in that manner, then your conscience might actually tell you that you did wrong by letting such a person live; Conscience is subjective.

Conscience is a moral faculty that leads to feelings of remorse when we do things that go against our moral precepts. Such feelings are not intellectually reached, though they may cause us to 'examine our conscience' and review those moral precepts, or perhaps resolve to avoid repeating the behaviour.

Commonly used metaphors refer to the "voice of conscience" or "voice within".

a conscience is what tells you to turn in the money you found when no one saw you find it. You turn it in simply because it isn't yours and it would not be right to keep it.
