It all came about in the 1984-85 season. It was purely a shrewd marketing move by new commissioner David Stern. It had nothing to do with team fatigue (though that was the excuse that Stern used at the time). What it DID do was increase the likelihood of a six or seven game series, and that's when viewership increased as well as revenues.

What it also did was make it almost essential for the team with home court advantage to win it's first two games, or risk not returning for games six and seven.

I totally disagree with this concept. To me, game five in a seven game series is the most critical game, and it should be held at the home team's arena. If fatigue was such a factor, they could increase the days between games to give the players an extra day of rest.

The put the format like that in '85 because of the Celtics and Lakers going back and forth. That way, you don't have to travel as much, so it reduces cost, and essentially player fatigue. However, it screws teams over that lose the first two home games, because they may never get another home game.

It is very rare that a team on the road loses all three, like Dallas did. It does seem odd that the finals are diff though.

because the NBA is stupid.
david stern is an idiot, and should realize that it is ludicrous to have the playoff teams get used to a new system and change it for the most important series of their lives.
