Just spray them with 200 cm3 of 2,4-D per acre.
This herbicide controls almost every braodleaf and is harmless to all types of grass.
It is extremely cheap.
Look for it at any grain elevator, is gonna cost you just cents for your whole yard.

Addition answering ''grandma'':

2,4-D ONLY controls broadleaf weeds, as I told you.
It is absolutely harmless to any monocotyledon plant.
All grasses are monocotyledons.
Its residuality is ONLY about 4-5 days.
It is the cheapest to use on thistles, and, like scoobyd3 says is the safest when you want to be sure that you will effectively control them because of that protection barrier they have.

Listen to Jose. The trick with thistle is that there is a waxy outer layer that prevents absorbtion of the broadleaf weed control. 2,4-D will break down that layer. When I worked at Trugreen, whenever I would run across a species of weed that had waxy layers, I would kick and twist them to break open leave and stems. It will work as well, but 2,4-D is more of a sure shot. With the kicking method you have to hope enough chemical gets into the breaks.

You can get a weed killer that will be safe for the grass... go to a garden centre or even Crappy Tire or Home Depreso and they'll likely be able to tell you what you can use. Hand picking them works but if you have that many, it might not be worth it.

A good pair of leather gloves and a strong back should do the trick. Don't forget your bottle of water. It's hot in S. Ontario today.
