These problems are dealing with proportions. Problem 1: The property tax on a $45,000 home is $1912.50. At the same rate what would be the property tax on a $60,000 home? Problem 2: A computer prints 2000 characters every 3 seconds. If there are approximately 3300 characters on a page, how many seconds willit take to print 2 pages?

Problem 1:

1912.50/45,000 = x/60,000
45,000x=60,000*1912.50
45,000x=114750000
x=114750000/45000
x=2550

Problem 2:
(2000/3 = 3300/x)*2
(2000x=9900)*2
(x=9900/2000)*2
(x=4.95)*2
x=9.9 seconds

These solutions are solving for x algebraically, but are the long way.

As mentioned above, an easier way is to figure the percentage of each and then multiply.

So $1,912.50 divided by $45,000 = .0425. Multiply this by $60,000 (60,000*.0425) = $2,550.

The same can be applied to the number of seconds.
It takes 3 seconds to print 2000 characters...3/2000 = .0015 (or 1 character every .0015 seconds). Then multiply this by 3300 to get the time for 1 page = 4.95 seconds. Then multiply by 2 to get the time for two pages: 4.95*2 = 9.9 seconds.

Problem 1:
$1912.50/45000 = 0.0425
0.0425*60000= $2550
The property tax on the $60 000 home would be $2550.

Problem 2:
3300*2 = 6600 characters
3/2000 = 0.0015 seconds per character
0.0015*6600 = 9.9 seconds
It will take 9.9 seconds to print 2 pages.

1.)1912.5/45000=.0425
that means the tax is 4.25 percent of the house so now you find the amount of tax on a $60,000 house by ...
60000*.0425=2550

2.) set up proportions... 2000 characters is to 3 seconds figure this out first
2000/3...3300/x

2000x=9900
2000x/2000=9900/2000

4.95 seconds

that is for one page so for two pages...

4.95*2=9.9 or about 10 seconds

problem 1:
45,000 / 1912.50 = 23.529411
60,000/ 23.529411 = 2,550
the answer is $2550

problem 2 :
2000/3 = 666.6666 characters per second
2 x 3300 (for the 2 pages) = 6600
6600/666.6666666 = 9.9 seconds

1. The property tax on a $60,000 home would be $2550

a.1912.50 / 45,000 = 0.0425 = 4.25%
b. 60,000 * 0,0425 = 2,550

2. 9.9 seconds

3/2000 = x/6600
2000x = 19800
x = 9.9 sec

I will help you answer question 1 and you should be able to use the same principles to answer question 2. In order to find out the rate at which the property taxes are calculated, you need to find out this question: WHAT PERCENT IS 1,912.50 OF 45,000. To answer this, simply divide 1912.5 into 45000 to get 4.25%. (1912.5/45000 = .0425) Then, since the question indicates that the same rate is used, simply multiply the value of the home (65,000) by the rate (4.25%) to figure out the property taxes. (65,000*.0425 = 2550) So, the answer to question 1 is $2,550.

Those answers are correct. You can set up an equation as follows:

1912.50 / 45000 = X / 60000

Now you solve for X by multiplying both sides by 60000. That should give you the answer of 2550. You can do the same thing with all direct proportionalities.

P1..tax= 60000*1912.50/45000= $2550

P2..time 3*(3300*2)/2000 = 9.9 sec
