Try this link. If you see a picture of what the cable looks like you'll know what to call it.

It sounds like you need a USB extension cable, which would basically have a USB plug at one end, which you'd plug into the computer's USB port, and a USB socket at the other end, allowing you to connect a device with a regular USB plug, like a card reader, or another USB cable that then goes to a printer.

However, you say that both ends are the same; I've never seen one of those having either plugs or sockets at both ends. The only plug - plug ones I've seen are the ones that have the square connector on one end, usually used by printers and other USB devices, and the ones with mini-USB plugs which are used for cameras.

If you are looking for a simple USB extension, you can get one anywhere they sell computer parts & supplies. If it's more unusual, you'll have to do some hunting.

Assuming you want to connect a printer or external hard drive, all you need to ask for is a Type A Male to Type B Male USB cable. This is the 'standard' USB cable with standard size plugs. The "A" Male plug is the one that plugs into your computer. The "B" Male plug is somewhat sqaure in shape and would plug into your printer, etc.

If you want to connect a camera, or MP3 player, you will need to determine which of several Type B Male Mini-Plugs your device uses. For such devices, you almost need to visit a computer store to be sure you get the correct connector.

all I can assume is that it is some sort of extension cable - as you aren't explaining what you need to use it for. Instead of buying it online, why not go to a store that sells computer products, by explaining to the salesperson I'm sure they can help you find what you need.

Have you tried going to an electronics store such as Radio Shack, Fry's, or even Best Buy and explaining yourself to a sales person. They may be able to help you.
