African Bush Elephants have in fact gored and killed Black Rhinos before. It's the only animal that can kill it and they found holes in the carcass where it was obvious it was gored to death.

In general, the elephant has enough advantages to win in a fight.
The Discovery Channel's show covering that missed a couple points (ex. elephants are not very nimble in a full gallop) and the computer simulation was flawed badly (ex. the rhino's horn would have sliced the elephant's side). That show, in itself, had too many problems to continue when it covered various face-offs.
Rhinos are not hapless victims neither. There was a video of a rhino attacking an invading elephant and forcing the elephant to leave the area.
With that being said, elephants are stronger and have better senses than rhinos. Plus, elephants have more weapons available, so the concensus victory would favor the elephant.
But then again, anything can happen in the wild.

EWWWWWWWW good question, I love it.
Well lets see the play by play
Elephant come up from the right and swings his trunk and knock rhinoceros for a loop.
Rhinoceros shakes it off and stampedes towards elephant.
Elephant moves just in time and escapes what could of been a serious blow. But he still gets a scratch as rhinoceros horns catches elephants leg.
This seems to have made elephant really mad and he is swinging his trunk like a maniac.
WOOOOOWW he just hit rhinoceros across the face and left a nasty mark.
Rhinoceros is not doing well, he is stumbling all over the place.
Wait, wait looks like rhinoceros is going to kneel over. No he catches his balance, but elephant is coming right at him. This time elephant catches him with his tusk.
Thats it folks down goes rhinoceros.
So there you have it the elephant.

elephants are smarter and would probably avoid the battle unless their babies were involved, okay so if babies were around or if the rhino and elephant were rabid they may battle. okay yeah, they are rabid and pissed at everyone so the rhino would charge cuz that's what they do. then the elephant can't get out of the way and if it was an african male, he could gouge the charging rhino with his tusks. the rhino may stick the elephant in the trunk but the elephant , with his tusks stuck in the rhino, could probably lift him with the assist of his damaged trunk. then toss or simply slam the rhino. the elephant can lift his front legs off the ground long enough to bring them down for a stomp on the rhino now low to the ground after being slammed there. the elephant then proceeds to impale the rhino time and again till it stops moving. the rhino may get a few jabs in but with his shorter reach would probably miss vital organs. if the rhino could catch the elephant off guard at the begining and charge the elephant in the ribs possibly into the heart itself obviously it would be victorious. but sneaking up on an elephant is next to impossible with those huge ears.
elephant = victor.

The winner in a wrestle between a rhino and an elephant is maximum in all likelihood going to be the rhino. besides the elephants humongous ft, if the elephant does no longer have horns beside that is trunk it ought to't do a larger harm than what a rhino can do to an elephant. Rhinos have heavy sharp and enormous horns which it makes use of to wrestle off any unwelcoming predator.

This is the first question I ever answered on Yahoo! Answers, and the first 'best answer' I got, heres the answer I gave then.
Elephants, There was a case a few years ago of an elephant relocation programme in South Africa. The males moved were young and caused a lot of problems by killing a number of endangered rihno (5 I think!). Problem was sorted when they introduced an older, larger dominant male who suppresed the 'musth' (state of increased hormones when males go a little bananas)of the younger ones.

Is it a northern elephant or southern elephant? It makes a difference because a northern elephant would knock out the referee and cheat.

The Rhino because, although "dummer" (brain size isn't really an accurate prediction of "smartness"), he would practically chop te elephant's feet with his horn. Of course that's only one scenario.
