The same kind of people who wanted to be beatniks in the 1950s, death pixies in the 60s and 70s, etc. There's a strange irony about people who choose to express their individualism through conformity. But if you don't conform to any of several life affirming main stream sub cultures, than you might be drawn to Goth. The term, of course, derives from Gothic horror novels, not actual Visi or Ostro Goths, the tribes that sacked Rome. If you are a person who has a deep visceral fear of death and the supernatural, you might be drawn to the Goth subculture in order to confront your fears and make a strength out of a weakness. Of course, you might also want to do it just to piss off your folks. You might even just be a poser who is into Goth just for the aesthetics rather than any deep attachment to Goth values.

I think probably, insecurity and no sense of direction. But who knows. Maybe they just like the- my fingers just got hit with a hammer look. I think it's sort of a rebellion against mainstream pop culture. It's the exact opposite of the tan skinn blonde haired girl that is soooooo desirable according to the media.
I think both points are valid.

i knew of this cool lady at "the hair police" who loved "gothic" people. i'm not sure why, some people like some things. some like mermaids, others choose goths and some choose both. i guess its what they stand for, and how they look, but i wouldn't know because i'm not that lady
