I have two recommendations that are personal favorites of mine. Just by coincidence, Roger Ebert has done articles for his "Great Movies" section on his webpage of both these movies. They arent comedies, but are really good dramas.

The first is Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai". It is from the 50's, in black and white, and in all japanese. It is also 3 1/2 hours long so you gotta be ready to put in the time to watch it. It is definatly an epic story with info on what it takes to be a samurai and what they do to keep their honor. They fight for very little and struggle because they choose to. Very good film, one of my all time favorites and probably one of the greatest movies ever created.

The second is Dark City. Very good dark film that is filled with symbolism and is very surreal. It is about a man who can't remember past memories but somehoe is the only one who doesnt fall asleep when the "Strangers" alter the people and the world around him. His struggle is to overcome the "Strangers" and figure out the truth to the world and the past, and save society from this unknown evil. Very good imagery and origional concepts are in this movie. It came out one year before The Matrix but has some similarities and some sets from Dark City were even reused to created the dark landscapes in The Matrix. Some shots in the two films are fairly identical too.

Here are the links to Roger Eberts "Great Movie" reviews and see why he thinks they are so great.
