I don't think that most people would really be able to tell the difference between a dark bluish-purple from indigo...they are too similar! I have also heard that the person who constructed the visual spectrum (I can't recall who) liked to have things arrainged in a group of seven, and this may be why indigo is even listed as a color in it's own right. That's why we have Roy G. Biv: red orange, yellow, green, blue, INDIGO, and violet.

I believe indigo is seen, but like green it is very small and difficult to make out from the other more brilliant colors. I think the fact that there is so little difference between Indigo and Purple makes it hard to see Indigo as well.
Look at Sunsets. When they are Red/ Orange. If you follow the colors back to the dark side of the sky, you can see the colors of the rainbow as well. If you look really close, there's a green stripe in there too!

I saw a rainbow this morning... all rainbows are different. I do not see a lot of indigo,but now that I saw that ..it will be bursting at the seams

It depends on the rainbow, but it should be seen.... although I don't see why that even matters.
