By the way I live in the UK, so prices over here for both these cars are probably slightly less than US (for once!). a class is about £18000 new and beetle is £13000-ish!

Well...if you put any stock in Consumer Reports, they tend to give the Volkswagons higher ratings in terms of reliability and performance over the Mercedes. If, however, money is not an issue, and you prefer the look of the Mercedes, then go with the Mercedes. The Beetle is going to be nicer to your wallet initially and beyond, if you believe the ratings from Consumer Reports.
(Just an afterthought, but...the last thing you want to do is buy a car solely for the purpose of outward expression. Always start with what you want, and then look at what each vehicle has to offer. Reliability, performance, depreciation....these should be high on your list.)

The Beetle. That new A-Class is so UGLY. And the beetle is cheaper. But, Instead of the A-Class or beetle, get the 2006 ML350. They are HOT,and cost the same as the A-Class

mercedes will be a better car. It's more expensive to maintain but they have the history and the rep. Beetles are nifty but are small and underpowred. easier to fix and cheaper. beetles get a nice vibrant color like green or deep blue. Benz, get it silver or black. mercedes is much classier and will impress lots of people and beetles are more for kids and hippies

I personally would go for the Mercedes-Benz. I know it may cost more £ for you,but I believe its worth it. When we lived in the United Kingdom our dealer was Mercedes-Benz of Mayfair (London). They had much better service and were very nice (considerably nicer than the Aston Martin Dealer down the road! We were considering both but after visiting the dealer it was clear which one we were getting!). I also would suggest the MB because of its excellence in safety.

I would say the Mercedes-Benz A-Class just because it is a very compact car and interior is roomy. But it has a 4-cylinder engine in case you wanted 6-cylinder.

The A-Class isn't available in the US yet, but the NB is. Sadly for you folk "over there" the prices are lower "over here". The Queen certainly gets her due at tax time...

There's only a difference of about $40,000... the last thing I would be worried about is the engine.
Pick whichever car goes best with your budget.
