She is very demanding, and has a hard time understanding the way others feel. I have put up with this for over 18 years now. How do I clue her in that this bugs me to no end?

You just have to be honest with her. When you tell her how you feel, and she tries to force her opinion on you - just tell her thats not how you see it and you don't appreciate her forcing her opinions on you. She might not even realize what she's doing and how it makes you feel - be honest and let her know!

The best thing to do with people like that is to just let it go right over your head.

If you continue to try to live up to her expectations, or view things the way she wants you to view them, she'll find more and more things wrong and try to fore more expectations and opinions on you.

Just have patience smile and possible shake your head with a laugh at how silly she's trying to be telling you what to do when you have your own understanding and will be fine regarless of her imput.

Tell her, "Mom, with all due respect, I value your opinion, but I also have my own. I realize you have lived longer than me and have more experience, but right or wrong I have to be allowed to form my own opinions, make my own mistakes and learn from them. As my mother I hope you will be there to support me and lift me up when I fall, even though I made a mistake and probably should have listened to you."

Tell her that you appreciate her opinion, and that you need help in making a decision. (Key words being "need help".) If she tries to force her opinion on you, tell her that you really need her support regardless of your decision, and that you are going to her because you respect her opinion.

If that doesn't work, then you may need to sit down and have a heart-to-heart.

She's your mother. She will never get clued in. You're grown..just see her less often, and when the conversations get too bad, leave.
