There are many computer programs that allow you to create your own beats. Fruity Loops is very simple, but still a good program. It is a step sequencer (basically just clicking a bunch of boxes that determine when they play). Acid Pro and Reason are other popular programs, but they work differently and seem to be more complicated to me. You would also need a professional mic to go along with this. The programs vary in cost, but if you know where to look you could get them for free...
As far as actual studio hardware, check out Pro Tools or akai mpc series (they have names like mpc 4000, mpc 3000). I think those machines will cost you a few hundred at the least, I don't know the exact prices. To have your own mini studio, expect to spend at least a few thousand, and thats if you go with a basic older models of everything.
Hope that helps.

Fruity Loopz, Acid Pro, and Reason are usually what everyone is using now. Protools to record I guess is okay, although Nuendo is better but more expensive. A trigger finger is also handy, beyerdynamic dt-770 headphones are nice, and your definitely gonna need a keyboard. YOU HAVE to learn to play keys, it teaches you alot. And of course some software wouldn't hurt with Hot drum samples to start out with. Oh, and click here to see some equipment. Check out the new Triton studio. http://korg.com/
Hope I helped a little. These are just things I've learned from being a songwriter, and being in the studio all day, all night.

Turn tables, records, and a good teacher. You can't learn on your own until someone teaches you the basics. Go to a vinyl store they'll help you out. It depends on what you want to spin, jungle, house, trance, reggae, hip hop etc.
