Kids don't have to have ID when traveling. For most airports it is 18, for some it is 16. But, children don't need to show their ID. If you have a child that will be sitting on your lap, it is a good idea to bring a birth certficate in case the agent wants to give you a hard time.

Adults don't need a passport either, as long as you are from the U.S. and traveling within the U.S. For adults, just a state issued I.D. is all you will need.

kids under 16 can travel with out an id but you can still get your child a stste id at any age which comes in handy if you ever take the train cause they require ids for 12 and up .

most, if not all, states have provisions for state id cards for children. also, if children are travelling with parents, they can carry the state certified birth certificate along with the parents drivers licenses for comparison against the birth certificate.

Their birth certificate is the usual acceptable document. It's what the airlines use.
