I'm always on a tight budget for my independent film production agency and end up shorting myself on all financial aspects of my movies.
Does anyone know where I can get acess to set designing tips or tutorials?
I know this seems like a broad question, but I have been having trouble making my sets look authentic on a budget. They often times have repetative looks to them and don't get the effect I'm looking towards.

Also, is it a good idea to buy or make those oddball props that add to scenery?
As far as buying goes, what are some good places to buy props at?

Please anyone that knows anything about making sets would you post what you're grandest ideas have been that looked authentic and great?

I built sets for stage plays when I was younger and didn't care about the little things like eating and paying rent. The best place to go for both set dressing and costumes is the thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army as well as any local shops.

Find someone, such as a student, who can paint the best backdrops. Good backdrops can give you depth when space is not available. If you can keep your camera movement to a minimum, you can fill a room with painted in props against the "wall," such as bookshelves, windows, lamp sconces, etc. Through a camera's viewfider, you may see surprising realistic results.
