Your answer does you credit, homeless people are regularly abused, beaten, and I'm tired of hearing people say "something should be done about it" when it turns out they mean "they should be made to go somewhere else".
The support services just aren't there; its not easy for people to get off the streets. Landlords just don't rent to the homeless. hostels can be just awful. People need help figuring out how to pay bills and claim benefits and manage on the pittance we allow them.
Not everyone who has a drug habit wants to quit, when your life is so bad that you need drugs to get through it, whats the point of taking away the drugs when the problems are still there? Homeless drug addicts are left with two massive problems to deal with; at least those with families and support have an incentive to go through withdrawal.
Some people just can't cope with the endless form filling and hassle that is life on the dole these days. Some people just don't have the social skills to keep it together.
I don't think there are any easy answers, but most people prefer not to be homeless. Its a disgrace that we need charities such as shelter in a civilised and affluent society. Just remind yourself "There but for the grace of god go I" and remember to donate your unwanted goods to charities that support the homeless and keep your humanity intact even when its difficult.
There is no housing shortage in this country. So don't blame refugees for homelessness, its just ignorant.
The Tories sold off all the council housing stock to Private landlords who just want to make money; and the councils weren't allowed to use the cash to re-invest in housing.
Housing associations are working flat out to decrease the "turn around time" (the time it takes to re-let an empty property) but that's still a problem.
Too many houses in this country are used as second homes; homelessness is a massive problem in prettier areas of the countryside where locals cannot afford to buy.
And too many houses still stand empty. Councils can now force landlords to renovate and let, so its not so much of a problem as it used to be.

Oh, honey, I can't answer this in one page... but in a nutshell, Poverty, Mental Illness, Addiction are the primary causes. Then there's the fact that a lot of shelters are worse than the streets - full of bugs, theives, and disease, and if you have a partner, child or pet you're not allowed to bring them with you.
You could go to university and study this for four years and still not have a simple answer. Some people I know PREFER to live on the street - they get pick-up work, they sell newspapers, they panhandle. Others are there by circumstance - left abusive families before they had an education, and/or got hooked on something. If you're being sexually abused at home, you may as well go sell it on the street - right? At least then you get something out of it.
Also there is a major problem with the Welfare system; you can't get a welfare check unless you have an address, and how are you supposed to get an address when you have no money or income? During the summer at least, sleeping in the park is as good as or better than sleeping in some of the rooming houses people on Welfare can afford.
It's a bad situation and I don't believe it will ever go away completely. Bless you for being concerned - you would make an excellent social worker or political advocate for the homeless.
PS if you want to see how bad homeless shelters can be, go volunteer at one. You'll understand more then.

There are some really great charities out there for the homeless, one guy that was trying to drum up sponsorship in central London pulled me up and was telling me about all the work this particular charity does.
He said that 90 odd percent of homeless people end up with jobs etc with the support of this charity and I was really impressed so there are some positive moves to help the homeless.
Great question oh caped crusader (I just had an idea actually ...)
(I'll change the pic soon, don't worry!)

There are the poor in every sector of this earth. If you feel within your heart that someone is in need, then handle it in your own way. I personally am a poor person but when I can, I will help someone else. Now if I see someone who is in need of food, I will walk with them to a restaurant and order food for them. I don't make a big deal out of it. I try to make sure that they are full as I probably won't be seeing them again. I have even tried to find people whom I had seen the day before, but I never can find these people. I don't know if they go up into "thin air." It is mind boggling. Remember this, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" - Romans 8:31. Peace and God Bless.

What would have to happen is a major overhaul in society's beliefs and values. Society, overall, values money over human beings.
There would need to be a major shift in social consciousness for a real change to be made.
Unfortunately in our society it is a me, me, me mentality.
There needs to be redistribution of wealth. What the hell good is it for one person to have millions, while millions starve. I don't care how hard he worked for it, or how hard his grandfather worked for it, valuing money over people is why there are homeless, even in wealthy nations.
I know, I know. I'm going to hear about how we live in a democracy and how our capitalist society gives everyone an equal chance if they just work hard enough. Bull-Puckey! If that were true, how can there be SO many poor.
The fact is there are the few elite rich and the poor masses. Not the concept of capitalism. We need to incorporate more socialist policies and think about the the redistribution of wealth and sharing of resources.
Do you know how every person in every household could, for instance, own a vacuum cleaner?
If say every four houses bought one and shared it. They don't all have to have their own. Sharing of resources.

Generally speaking, those who do not want to be homeless find some way not to be and are not homeless for long. They get help from their churches and from communities services available.
The remainder are mentally ill, substance abusers, or people who simply want to be parasites on society for which there is no help.

Money, money, money. If you don't have it, can't access it, can't manage it, you end up homeless. We have created a world where we must all aspire to make more and more money in order to survive. In many rural areas of Southern Africa where money is not so important, you do not find homeless people.
