Isn't a shower for first timers only? This is getting ridiculously out of hand. Come on people, agree with me, agree with me! LOL

first house and first wedding ... and any baby are appropriate times for a shower and registry and gifts and all that.

after the first wedding and first house, it's a little greedy. there should be a baby shower for every baby because the parent's will always need stuff for baby.

you might try going the traditional route at these functions and bring a homemade gift. traditionally, a housewarming gift was bread - so make a homemade loaf (you can buy a frozen dough and cook it, easy, cheap and delicious) - accompany it with a bottle of wine or hunk of cheese and you've got a great gift ... you can make a casserole for a baby shower (say "i thought you would be so tired with everything, so here's dinner on me!) ... and a glass dish, candle holders or something for a wedding shower (can be bought very cheaply at Ross, TJ Maxx, or Kohl's - in fact, I stockpile these items for just such an occasion).

It's frustrating, I agree. But you don't want to risk sounding like a party pooper ... so cheap gifts are really the way to go. and people never complain about homemade items ... it's very thoughtful!

I totally disagree with you. Just because someone is getting married again, doesn't mean that they have everything they need. The ex could have gotten most of what they had (like my ex did). If you don't want to go to all of those showers, then don't. NO ONE is making you go. It is NOT abusing the family to have showers either. It is a way for family and friends to get together, the in laws to meet, and to get things that you don't have.

actually I thought the same thing, but my inlaws threw me a surprise shower for my second child as well. I was thrilled, they use every excuse to get the whole family together and it is really nice. The gifts were great too as I had gotten rid of all of the baby stuff from my previous child. But if the cost is getting out of hand for you than try getting inexpensive, but personal gifts, photo albums are always a big hit.

it is a bit ridiculous to have a shower for every wedding, baby and home.. but for the person having the shower it is a time to reflect and a opportunity to enjoy a new chapter of their life. this allows not only friends but family to show that person how truly happy they are for their loved one. and offer great tips.

Showers are supposed to be for a first wedding, first baby, etc. The only exception that I can understand is if you are remarried and decide to have another child with your current spouse YEARS after you had your first child... so long that you have absolutely no baby equiptment or supplies that could be reused.

I disagree on one of your points:
* Every baby born is a miracle and should be celebrated.

But I do agree with you on the others:
* You could just have a bachelorette party and just go out and get toasted instead of that awkward moment and too much tacky lingerie.
* House warming- just call a flourist, they deliver.

I am completely against showers of any nature. I forbade my family and friends from throwing showers for my wedding and birth of daughter. I simply would not have gone.
