Was tickling used as a method of torture in the past or even in the present day? I was just wondering where the term "tickle torture" came from. Anyone know?

Most tickle torture is caused when someone straps another person into any contraption, which exposes the desired ticklish spot and restrains the victim from stopping the tickling. An example would be the stocks, a device that held the persons bare feet firmly in place and sometimes held the wrists to prevent the person from blocking anyone’s tickling fingers.

Another form is common between siblings, lovers, and friends. One or more people gang up on one person, and proceed to hold down that person and tickle them to the point of helpless laughter. This is commonly used to get someone to agree to something.

The last form of tickle torture is the deadly kind. You can't eat, sleep, or drink while laughing, so if someone were to strap you down and tickle you for days on end, you would almost certainly die. One purported example of this torture was used in Ancient Rome, where a person’s feet are dipped in a salt solution, and a goat is brought in to lick the solution off.

It is my understanding that "tickle torture" has a long-seeded history.

I have read that during the days of the Roman Empire records were found documenting a Roman torture known as goat licking. It was used to punish people. The victim’s bare feet were covered in salt, or a sweet substance then goats licked them usually until they were blistered.

In Colonial American times tickling was used not so much as a torture but as a form of public humiliation. Stocks would be used to restrain a person making the soles of their feet easily accessible and passersby would tickle torture them.

There is also a myth that says that the Chinese used tickling tortures for nobility. It was seen as a perfect punishment because it left no marks and the victim recovered fairly quickly. They would restrain the victim with the soles of their feet exposed and would tickle them for hours. The stocks were invented to specifically restrain a person with the soles of their feet exposed.

Many people today enjoy playful tickle torture where a trusted friend or lover tickles them to their limits but respects there limits, gives them necessary air brakes and keeps it fun for both parties.

I believe it is called "Chinese tickle torture" in the United States. It describes a hypothetical form of torture that involves tying a victim completely immobile and tickling them (most often on the feet) to the point of helpless laughter eventually leading to excruciating pain. Despite its name, there is no evidence that it has ever been used in China. The term originated in the 20th century but it is sometimes claimed that it was a method of torture used during the Han Dynasty.

There´s a form of tickle torture that consits in inmovilizing the victim as much as possible even the head and then punch the soles of the bare feet with a pointed knife avoiding to produce deep wounds...
I myself submitted to this. I was mummified and was tortured for half an hour and can tell you is actually horrible.

Not as a real torture, in the best meaning of the word. Of course it can be used to "torture", but in another way.
