A dragonfly is any insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body.
Dragonflies typically eat mosquitoes, midges and other small insects like flies, bees, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic. Dragonflies do not bite or sting humans; in fact, they are valued as a predator that helps control the populations of harmful insects, such as mosquitoes.

Everybody loves dragonflies. They praise them and get all fascinated by them.
I hate them.
Dragonflies have an extremely powerful bite for a bug that size, and are the fastest insects around, so it's incredibly hard to kill them. I think of them as a neuscence.

Large Dragonflies can give you a painful bite.
They have no stingers.

No. Neither insect has a stinger. And both of their mouths are to small to bite humans. Their main meal is mosquito. So yes the "run-off" creek is the source of your insect issues. Remember, in the insect world, they are the good guys, coming to save you and your family found the evil human biting mosquitoes.

When I was a kid, we called them flying needles because we were told they'd sew your mouth shut if you lied.
