Dallas and Ft. Worth both obtain their water supplies from several different Corp of Engineers lakes in north Texas. Lake Lewisville, Lake Benbrook, Lake Ray Hubbard, Lake Fork, etc; The metroplex is very large in terms of population and geographically. One lake (or reservoir) could never supply the needs of that many people spread over such a large area.
Recently, a giant lake was planned for Anderson County, east of Dallas, but, the government decided that it would become a federally protected wetlands and nature conservancy of almost 25,000 acres instead. Water supplies will continue to be problematic for the north Texas region well into the next century. This last move by the clueless congress did not help matters.

there are numerous lakes around DFW that are used to supply water. They are fed with water from either the Trinity river or the Brazos river.
