Normally the icons are hidden by windows... you'll se a button with '<' on it... when you press it.. all the icons will reappear.
It is done by usage.

The icon cache tends to get corrupted on versions of Windows prior to Windows 2000 (or Windows XP) and can sometimes happen even on these newer operating systems.

Go to www.microsoft.com and download an appropriate verion of the TweakUI tool for your OS. It is usually included as part of the "powertoys", a set of applications Microsoft provides for free, but offers no official support for.

There are options in TweakUI to rebuild your icon cache.

Hi,

(1) Install all the Windows updates.
(2) Update your antivirus program and run a full system scan for viruses.
(3) If still no help, than backup your data and go for a clean install.

Thanks,
