In addition there can also be auto-genocides like what took place in Cambodia where it was a class of individuals that was targeted rather than an outside racial group. Try researching Lempkin, he was the man that created the term, it should give you a place to start.

Genocide refers to an attempt to wipe out a particular race or nationality of people by killing them. That's where the "Geno" comes from--as in genetics as in particular races.
