It tells you pretty quickly which side of the street an address is on In many locations, if a house number is odd or even will indicate which side of the street it is on. In my city for instance, on a North-South street, odd numbers are on the west side. On East-West streets, odd numbers are on the north side.

It's the same here in the States. How that originated, I have no clue. Sorry. But I bet we got the custom from the British!
