Caduceus, it was the staff of Hermes/Mercury in mythology.

It's called the Caduceus, from classical Greece. It may well derive from the Hebrew tale of Moses, who at God's command, created a staff with a brass serpent. If you recall, the people needed only to have the faith to look upon the staff to be healed of deadly illness. Both symbols may derive from an even older tradition, but I do not know what it would be.
