Any change in diet can cause diarrhia in cats or dogs. If you haven't made a change recently and are not sure what could be causing the problem, you should take your cat to the vet because there may be another problem, such as a virus or infection. Don't let this problem continue for very long without speaking with a vet because diarrhia can cause dehydration quickly in cats.

As long as there have been no other signs of illness - take him off the "mushy" stuff and just give him the dry food. Dry food is better for them anyway, helps keep their teeth clean. If it continues after 48 hrs, you need to consult a vet. Take him and get a fecal test done, he could have some kind of an intestinal parasite such as girardia or coccidia - both will cause diahrria and need to be treated with medicine.

My brother's cat had this problem and his vet told him to feed the cat nothing but pumpkin (the stuff you buy in a can for pies) and the diahreah cleared up. Then introduce dry food again. Dietary changes can cause diahreah and the parasites and viruses mentioned in earlier responses. One thing to also keep in mind is that while diet can be part of the problem it is not always the whole problem. My cat used to have the runs when there was more stress in the house - and a friend of mine's dog gets the runs every time they leave town - stress related too. Don't discount their emotional - that is all part of their physical too - just like with human beings. Pumpkin for a two or three days - and if it doesn't clear up - get it to the vet and get the tests run for parasites. Try and make sure your place is calming and stress free.

Have you always fed your cat mushy food? If you have and this is just now starting, I would consult your vet. If this is the first time you are feeding the wet food, I would hold up on the wet and just try the dry and see if that clears up the issue.

If your cat does go outside as well, you could check the stool to see if there are any berries or things to see if your sweet child is getting into some poisonous plants. I know that sounds gross, doesn't it!?

Have you been giving the cat any milk? That frequently will cause them to have diarrhea.

If the cat has been outside, it might have eaten something that is upsetting it's tummy. Likewise, it may have found something inside to do that, too.

Keep an eye on the little critter, and if it doesn't get better in a day or two, see the Vet.

Dairreah can have many causes in cats. Change of diet, poor diet, Giarrdeah, Coccidia (small protozoa in the intestine). If it continues, you will need a vet to do a culture to figure out what is the cause for correct treatment.

If this has been going on for more than a day, you need to see your vet. The runs can cause dehydration and your cat can become extremely sick and could die if not treated.
You want to have him/her checked for worms. You will need a poop sample for your vet.

Try not to keep switching food. That can cause problems.

Well if you have just recently changed over the kind of food, ex. dry to wet, then that could give him diarrea. Also if you switched food brands on him. Try to stick to a constant brand and constant type of food.

I would feed it dry cat food and see if that helps. If not, take it to the vet.

have you changed food recently? takes a little for them to get used to new brands/types of food...also if a cat gets worms...it can result in that too
