Back when I was 8! My sister was 14 and she would blast Dookie. My first favorite song of theirs was Longview. I may not have known what all the words meant, but I loved it! And of course, to this day, I still love it. However, I think that it doesn't matter too much when people start to like bands, it just matters that they do like them. I mean, I'm inclined to agree with you because it seems like lots of people are just trying to be "cool" and jump on the bandwagon, but... some people just didn't get the opportunity to hear them until recently. Love is love! Haha ^_^; I mean, I'm having the same problem with Dir en Grey. They're a Japanese rock band that's starting to get popular amongst the hardcore rock community in America because they are now touring here. It's really hard for me to talk to new fans sometimes becase I feel like "Well, I've been into them for two damn years before you ever even HEARD of them!!!" But I have to realize that as long as they do appreciate them that's all that matters......... That was a really long rant! Haha, sorry! ^_^
Oh, and by the way I was eight 10 years ago, so I've been lovin' them for a while! ^_^

Ages ago my brother had one of his friends around, and he had brought International Super Hits with him. The first track I heard was 'Basket Case', and I thought it was amazing. A couple of months after that I went to Hard Rock Cafe in London and there were TV's everywhere and 'Minority' came on and it was excellent, so when I went back home I went to the shops and Warning was on sale for $3 and my brother went and got it, and then I got it a few weeks after. And then I got Shenanigans, after that I got Dookie, then 1039 smoothed out slappy hours and Kerplunk. My brother bought me Imsomniac. Then when American Idiot came he bought it and I listened to it for a bit. I liked it at first but Dookie is definetely Green Day's 'White Album'. I want to get Nimrod. I just found that recently that Green Day played at the Wood Stock festival back in '94, which makes me respect even more.
I think Green Day hav got a new album coming out so I'm looking forward to that!

I first heard of them when I saw the video for "Basket Case". I bought the Dookie album a short while later. I really caught onto them in 1998, after a friend of mine sent me mixtapes with a lot of Green Day songs on them, off the earlier albums.

this is shameful but it began with hearing American Idiot... before that I never listened to really ANY music but i heard American Idiot then went through my brothers music and found older hits such as minority, when i come around, (and YES) welcome to paradise. i now own kerplunk!, dookie, nimrod, shenanigans and AI.. plus i have singles from others. i love the old stuff, and the new stuff is totally different but awesome too!!! i listen more to the old stuff right now though cause people like you described above and the radio stations killed the American Idiot album.... we need a bit of a break of it before listening to it again.......

Dookie was played sooo much in my home when it came out. So much so that Dookie was one of the first words my baby daughter read!

I likes them when they first came out big in the early '90s. Then I learned better! There is more to music then the whiny poser-punk Green Day makes now.
