Syrian hamsters have better temperaments than dwarf hamsters. With dwarf hamsters you have to handle them everyday to keep them tame but with Syrian hamsters they'll stay tame forever without you constantly handling them. Dwarf hamsters can make great pets though. For you I'd say get a Syrian hamster. Just keep in mind that Syrians are solitary creatures and can only be kept alone. Dwarf hamsters can be housed with other dwarf hamsters but there's always a chance they wont get along.

Well i have had both kinds on hamsters in my past and i have found that teddy bear hamsters r nicer because when u get a female and she comes in heat she is not temper-mental.....but on the other hand a dwarf female hamster will be very mean when she comes into heat.....

Personally, I wouldn't get a hamster at all, if you are looking for a sweet rodent. I would go for a rat. They live longer, don't bite, and are smarter than other domestic rodents. If you can get over their tales they are a perfect pet. Hamsters die if they are put under stress, and don't really like being handled. Rats, however, are very sociable animals and it is good for them to get out and be played with. Hamsters are also nocturnal, so it is hard to have them active during the day and they can drive you crazy at night. Rats will be awake during the day, or whatever time you handle them the most. They are sweet animals, but if you are plan on having a pet rat, you should probably get two because they need the social interaction.

I actually have had both a form of style of hamsters in the previous. I beloved the Teddybear hamster better. they are nicer, and loved having atention and being held. Dwarf hamsters have a tendency to leap out of the holders hands and they chew better frequently. Dwarf hamsters are very VERY fragile, so i'd recommend a teddybear hamster. desire that helped!

I have had both types of hamsters and they both tend to bite just as easily...it all depends on how much they are handled. Personally I prefer rats because they are very sweet, never bite, and they love to be held...they don't constantly try to get away like hamsters to. If you really want a hamster though, I would just recommend finding one that you really like....you can address any behavior problems they may have. I had a dwarf hamster who used to bite when I first got him....all I had to do was find one of his favorite foods and hand feed him treats everyday and before long he couldn't wait to see me and he never bit me after that. Good luck with your decision they are all very sweet.

They are both good, but teddy bears are easier to hold, catch, etc. Dwarfs are very fast, not to mention small, so they are difficult to take care of.

We have found that hampsters can be difficult, you will just have to check each ones personality to find a good one....however we have had MANY gerbils & not one has ever bitten anybody! They are very sweet & sociable & easy to handle.
