Depending on the effectiveness of the thermonuclear device it could flatten anywhere from a 1/2 to 10 mile diameter and prevailing winds would carry fallout for hundreds of miles east.

The US would wipe North Korea of the map.Just think of Katrina just maybe 2or 3 fold.About 3 million would be killed with the blast if a big city was blasted and radiation would kill 1 more million and seriously mess up about 10 million people and spread radiation in probably a 100 mile radius. Now back to the war issue North Korea would be obliterated.China would get mad because radiation went into there country and south Korea would not care enough to attack us.China would attack us surprisingly(2ND Pearl Harbor)The entire country would be P***ed and WW3 would get started. The allies US,Japan,India,Taiwan,Europe,Australia,Israel and other less involved countries versus The axis China ,Russia ,South Asia Pakistan most of the middle east and other less involved countries.First a conventional war would be started then when the axis are desperate they would launch nuclear weapons by that time we would be spending massive amounts of money on our nuke defense system(SDI) so we could destroy all of them(maybe a few could get through).Once they exhaust their nuclear supplies we would be kick in A** and take over forming a Democratic state of the world and the whole would be ruled peacefully with 1 government.(The US spends more than 85 percent of the world military defense budget imagine that power in action against a country).

It depends on how strong the warhead is. North Korea would get wiped off the map in retaliation, there's no question about that. We wouldn't be able to stop the missle, because our missle defense system still sucks and can't hit a single incoming missle, nonetheless the advanced decoy systems the North Koreans have designed to fool missile interception systems. They've just built up an arsenal so that the US won't think about attacking them. It's like the cold war....both sides have nukes, so both sides are afraid to piss off the other one too much, fearing possible nuclear retalliation. Don't worry about it though. Their nukes are A-bombs which are pretty weak in comparison to the dreaded H-bomb. So at the most a couple of million americans die pretty quickly, and more get radiated. It could be worse. Better nuclear than biological I say.

It depends if it is a high altitude blast or a ground explosion. A 50 megaton nuke hitting ground zero in the middle of LA (the downtown highrises) would completley vaporise a 10-15 mile area, 15-25 mile area would be severely damaged with a death toll of 90% 20-35 miles radius would have a death toll of 75% and 35-50 miles from ground zero would have a death toll of 50%. Depending on any natural barriers (ie. the Hollywood hills) the San Fernado Valley would have about 25-45% residual damage. You must also factor in the 2000 degree 500mph blast concusion wave of super-heated air that would ignite anything within 100 miles of the blast creating a huge wave of fire in every direction and after that the gamma radiation that would kill everything within 150 mile radius of ground zero over a period of 1-3months of radiation poisoning. The lucky ones would die instantly in the explosion being vaporised in the blast. If the nuke is detonated "high" at let's say 12,000 feet above LA then the explosion would create a "concussion effect" that would level a 25 mile area under it but would expand out over the city creating much more destruction through a larger range of radiation and fire than a "ground zero" impact. Almost all of the Los Angeles area would suffer a 90% death rate. An Electro-mangetic pulse would destroy ALL ELECTRONIC ciruits within 200 miles of the blast and the entire water basin would be contaminated for 20,00 years with radioactive isotopes making the entire LA area a "death-zone". Watch the cartoon "Barefoot Gen" a Japanese anamation film written, produced and directed by a survior of the Hiroshima A-bomb in WW-2 and then multiple that by 1000. Amazingly some people actually survived that--but only .05% Good luck and preparation is the key to survival. Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.

If the west coast was hit by a nuke from N. Korea there would be radioactive dust that would travel from west to east across the USA and contaminate air and soil (if it rained). The USA would most likely strike back within hours of an attack and completely obliterate North Korea from the earth.

If Gore or Kerry was in office, we'd be speaking Korean and eating our pets and Kimchee.
Thank God they're NOT in office, so I suspect, we'd launch a few carpet bombs and take over North Korea within a month. Thereby taking over it's reserves and winning one again over communists. And we'd be rid of Hollywood. Hooray! Hooray for the loss of Hollywood!!
Only a really really really stupid country would attempt to launch a nuke at us.

Wouldn't it depend on where it hit?
But some things would be certain -- if we tracked the trajectory back to North Korea, the retaliatory response would be devastating for that already devastated Communist nation.

there was a movie called 'the day after' that was pretty good about the days leading up to and following a nuclear attack on the US.
it was just on SciFi. Look for it.
