Do you have to use checks in order?

I just found my old checkbook, which I had lost (somewhere inside my own house!). I've already started using the newer checkbooks with checks of higher numbers, so can I go back and use the older checks now that I found them?

but banks will put a * on your bank statement to indicate that the cancelled checks are out of sequence (just FYI in case someone got a hold of your checkbook)

Yes you can use them, but you should probably contact your bank first. A lot of banks use check numbers to catch check thieves (in case someone steals your checkbook or a bunch of checks). That way if they catch a series of checks way out of order they can be alert to fraud. Let them know that you found a series of checks that are numbered XXX - YYY. That way they won't think its fraudulent and stop payment on checks that are in that series that you have actually written.

It should be fine. Your bank statement will reflect the numbered checks out of order, but as long as you know what is happening with your checks, then you're fine.
