Yes you can use them, but you should probably contact your bank first. A lot of banks use check numbers to catch check thieves (in case someone steals your checkbook or a bunch of checks). That way if they catch a series of checks way out of order they can be alert to fraud. Let them know that you found a series of checks that are numbered XXX - YYY. That way they won't think its fraudulent and stop payment on checks that are in that series that you have actually written.

It should be fine. Your bank statement will reflect the numbered checks out of order, but as long as you know what is happening with your checks, then you're fine.
