I'm a sophomore just getting my generals out of the way and some business electives, but next year I will have to choose a major. Is finance a smart major? What type of careers would be open to me with a degree in finance.

Finance and accounting are excellent majors...my boss has advised me that if I'm thinking of going back to school, anything that deals with finances is a good degree as after the Enron scandal, etc., companies now place a great degree of value on their financial records and dealings.

Finance is basically applied economics, though not verbatim. So, I would suggest a different set credentials if you want to be more marketable to employers (as well as receive a higher starting salary). For instance, have you considered an economics major with a mathematics minor? Yes, upper-division mathematics is hard, but this is a very suiting combination, as the mathematics minor demonstrates to employers that you are quantitatively inclined. Or, perhaps a finance major with a minor or double major in accounting would tempt your tastes? Yes, accounting isn't the most exciting subject, but knowing the process behind the financial statements is a great tool for any finance related job. Also, if you can't get a finance related job, you can always fall back on accounting (after all, the economy isn't great, and job prospects on Wall Street are few and far in between). Best of luck!

Yes. I just graduated in finance and am in my first career job. Finance is a smart major because its practical. Whether you find a job in finance or not, you'll learn a lot of very useful information for your personal finances. It's nice to actually understand the economy and markets now too.

Generally, with a finance major, you can get almost any business related job you want. Business majors cross over the same studies very often. Like me for example, I work on computer networks with a finance degree. A real job is all about training and your ability to learn. I would encourage you to go into business. I think its the most versatile and practical business major. Good luck!

Finance sounds like a good major if you enjoy it. You can get employment in banks, insurance officers or other parts of the finance sector. You can also get jobs in the finance areas of any reasonable size corporation or in the public sector.

Whether or not finance is a good choice for you depends on what kinds of jobs you think you'd like to have in the future. A finance major would prepare you well to work as a financial analyst, investment banker, etc. Many companies, banks, mutual funds, nonprofits, and government agencies hire individuals who have a good knowledge of markets and finance to advise them on how to manage their money. The forecast for job growth in this area is good. check out http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/majors/majorBasics.asp?majorID=112 for more info on career options for finance majors and http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos259.htm for more information on careers and job outlooks.

Yes, young man. ( I do not mean that derogatorily--I wish I were still about your age!)

I went into Law, and regretted it.

It's always nice to know how money works. And if you want, after college, get an MBA (Masters of Business Administration).

Banking is International, and although you know English very well, it would not hurt to study French, Italian or especially, - DUTCH--the Dutch are the bankers of the world.!

Just take a few humanities-type courses, tho, like Art, Poetry, or whatever, to be well-rounded and to help meet chicks. :-())

banking, accounting..things of that sort.
I think it is a smart major but the field isn't exactly WIDE open.
I think it's better than economics though.
