Popular music would have you think that it is trendy to be uneducated, but street smart and materialistic. This is where some of the youth of today find their role models.
To me, the real fakes are the ones who go broke trying to emulate these trends. This people are in fact poor, as they have no real savings or accumulated wealth. They just have designer items to look as if they are wealthy.

I wouldn't say it's trendy to be poor because no one wants to be poor. But if you're referring to rap music where they always try to "represent da hood", then you might be thinking that's what they mean. It's foolish to think education and wealth make you fake. Obviously, an education gives you hope for overcoming many obstacles, and wealth is a lot of times the result of a great education.

I wouldn't say that it is trendy to be poor no. In today's society is acceptable to be seen as not wanting or needing anything in life, not having to worry about money or anything but not having so much that you didn't know what to do with it.
I wouldn't recommend going by what the entertainment/music industry implies. Work hard and get what you want in life. As long as you have what you want in life and know you worked hard for it YOU know that you aren't "fake" or "phony" but that it is most definite REAL.
Good luck.

I wouldn't say it's trendy to be poor, but the recent trend of anti-intellectualism is quite startling. The entertainment industry publicists simply try to draw a "grass roots" appeal to celebrities, in attempts to appear more "real" or "genuine" often to the extremes of claiming Horatio Alger "rags to riches" life stories. During our current recession, the entertainment industry is trying to appeal to people by equating super-stars with "common" people's problems.
Don't believe the hype, it's just a marketing strategy to gain visibility, credibility-- basically advertise their identities.

To be poor is not to have your needs met. People very in the level of their needs. God intends that all of us have our needs met. If our needs are met, then we are prosperous. If we have more than what is necessary to meet our needs, then we have an abundance. I cannot believe that in a country so wealthy as America that poverty could ever be trendy. Do not listen to the lyrics of modern music---I promise you that anyone that has a CD out is not poor. They sing about being poor because they do not have the imagination to sing about anything else. Their lives are as empty as is their music. They do not have Jesus in their lives, and this is the greatest poverty of all because it leads to death. Love Jesus as he loves you and you will be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams.

No that's just a crock to drag down everyone to the lowest common denominator. I think people use that to make them feel better about their lack of ambition. It's like when Oprah, Colin Powell and Condi Rice get accused of "acting white" or being "Uncle Toms" for being educated. It's bullsh!t.

People who act like they can't do any better are posing. If someone purposely acts ignorant, then that is phony. I don't know if it's trendy to be poor, but I know that it's definately not cool to be fake.
