One possible solution is the purchase of the St. Tropez Self Tan Remover (First link recommends this product), or in a pinch and if you have it on you, is the eye/lip makeup remover available for removing the Colorstay and waterproof or tint mascaras, I believe its Revlon Colorstay eye/lip makeup remover. Can't say for certain the latter will work and it could be an expensive proposition depending on how much tanner you have to remove. I don't know where you applied this but try either suggestion in an inconspicuous spot, with the makeup remover if you go that route let sit a few minutes and then rub gently with an exfoliating sponge in a circular motion. It's best to try removal as soon as possible after applying the tanner ... the longer it stays on the skin, the harder removal will be, if at all.

Use the following tips located at sites below to improve on the application next time around...exfoliation before application will help lessen or avoid altogether the problems you described.

Yep, exfoliate like crazy! Use a loofah.
Self tanner actually isn't bad for you, as someone else stated, it is the safest tan there is. Unfortunately, if not used correctly it can turn into a mess real quick.
I have been using the new Dove lotion with a mild self-tanner in it. The more you use it the more color you get so you don't end up orange!!
Good luck!

Time. Let it fade. Wear clothes to cover the splotchy places. Don't do those other things that people have said. It will only irritate your skin further and potentially cause rashes or pimples in places you really don't want them. Don't mess with your skin, you only get one and tanning ages you exponentially. White skin is beautiful. My fiance is Japanese, but she such beautiful soft white skin. So amazing.

Exfoliate. Try to put on a regular lotion to keep your sking moisturized. You could hide the blotchiness by putting on a tinted lotion. Put on a couple of layers. Since it is tinted, you will have an instant tan.
Exfoliating is the quickest solution. Use an apricot scurb, loofah or bath brush.

To get rid of blotchiness, baking soda is your friend. Get damp in the shower, and massage dry baking soda onto your damp skin, rubbing in small, gentle circles. This will gently take off any dead skin that is ready to come off. Usually just one baking soda scrub will leave everything looking even and less orange.

Use a exfoliater and scrub really hard, itll gradually fade! If you have streaky elbows or shoulders or knees soak them in lemon juice the acid disolves the tan :)

it depends if you did it yourself or got it done at a tanning place. at the tanning place, they can give you things to get it off if they put it on. but if you did it yourself, you can use vinegar on your skin and then wash that off. you may smell like vinegar, but it could be better than looking like an oompa loompa
