laziness is not a very good work ethic, some employers wont fire them because they are keeping a certain # of personnel in the workplace. how can this be reported without fear of repercussions?

I think it's totally unfair no matter how BIG or how small the company. Now if there is nothing for you or another employee to do b/c you or he/she has completed all of your work for that day, as I sometimes go through, then that's something completely different. But like I said, it's so unfair and sometimes management turns a blind eye to it for whatever reason and to keep yourself from getting fired, you have to bit your lip even though you really feel like telling management or that employee off. As far as reporting it, that I'm not sure about. Maybe contacting the labor board in your area if you have one or read the labor laws, maybe, for your state and see what they say about reporting a co-worker.

Try to make it about you, so you don't sound like a tattle-tale. Say, "I've been getting really stressed out lately because I feel like when I work with Bob, Jim and Sally, I am doing all the work while they chat online and take coffee breaks. If you look at my sales recently, I think you'll see that I've sold more than all of them combined because I'm picking up their slack. Is there any way we could lighten my load?" It's possible the employer just doesn't know what's going on because he or she doesn't spend enough time on the front lines, working directly with the employees and getting feedback.

I think I might be one of those lazy people, and I used to wonder about lazy people too. I used to work hard, but it didn't make a difference. After years in engineering school, I still get paid the same and I can barely afford to pay the bills and feed my family, so it gets a bit hard to give a $hit about a company when you constantly have to worry about having enough money to put gas in your car so you can get to work on days when you can't bike (I bike to work most of the time to save money, 10 mile roundtrip)+40 mile bus roundtrip. If you can tell me how to get out of this hole I might just become motivated enough to work real hard.
By the way, my wife doesn't even have medical insurance. We simply don't have any money (like we have to choose between food or insurance).
Quit being so self righteous.

laziness exists in the workplace bcuz management is disorganized. blame them. i'm doing Yahoo answers for the past 4 hours at work and nothing's being done about it. And I've never heard of people being fired because they were lazy, everyone is lazy at work for one reason or another. and as far as reporting this behavior to higher ups, I believe it's called snitching.

That is what is going on at my job. I am the IT administrator and I have a bunch of responsibilities that are not in my job field but I am doing them because one of our managers are lazy so now there are 5 people that are helping to cover the work of 1.

there is an old saying that 20% of the people do 80% of the work. Sad but true.

You could submit a note "off the record" and annomonyus that says you've noticed certain employees are not pulling their weight and you wanted to bring it to the bosses attention.

It usually can't. Somehow they almost always find out. I'm not sure there is any agency that will accept an anonymous complaint. However, every workplace is like that. It seems the be nature of the working world these days.
