It'll have to have the right codec. Some DVD players will play it. I do it all the time with a 50 dollar Panasonic DVD player that has DivX codec.

You can if you have a Phillips DVP 642 DVD player. This player will play most avi files but not all. Mainly it will play Divx and some xvid avi files. There may be other DVD players out there that will play avi's.

You can get TMPGEnc. This will convert the avi to mpeg. Then you can use your DVD software to make a DVD that will play in a regular DVD player. It's good you are using DVD-R because it is more compatible with more DVD players.

If you are not to familiar with making a DVD I would use a rewritable DVD to practice on. Once you get it working then you can just copy it.

The player must support divx files otherwise no, you'll need to encode it as a dvd movie and play it as a regular movie. If you want to encode it, then most burning programs include the feature such as nero or roxio. Do a google search for DVD authoring software, you'll find lots.

Absolutely. A normal movie file would be considered an .avi file. Nero is a good program for burning movies.
