Sometimes I think that I'd like the lifestyle but wouldn't enjoy the fashions. Can I be a fastidious hermit who lives in a house and eats more than gruel and nuts and stuff?

1. Pick a location. Forests in the middle of no where are preferred.
2. Find a dwelling. Do you like caves? Or cabins, perhaps? Build your own special hermitage if you like, with wood from the local trees.
3. Decide on your wardrobe. This is key. A sack is easiest, but anything involving flannel will do.
4. Find a source of food. Scavenge the local wilderness! Look for berries, nuts, herbs. You can even hunt and cook your own food, if you feel up to the challenge.
5. Learn to like youself. You will be your best company. Who needs friends when you can be a hermit?

Of course, you can just shut yourself off from society in your house/current dwelling. You don't have to be an extreme hermit! You can be a soft-core hermit, and eat and dress however you wish. I have tried this lifestyle, and don't find it's for me. But perhaps you might like it.

In order to be a hermit, you don't have to give up fashion or any of that stuff. All you have to do is stay inside all the time. If you rarely ever leave your house, that's what makes you a hermit.

As long as you shun human contact, you're a hermit. It doesn't matter how you dress or what you eat, nobody will be around to criticize you.
