Lots of things to consider.

Will you be around a lot, or a little? Do you mind housetraining or cleaning a litter box?

Are you a night owl, or a day person?

Birds: Pros: Very fun to play with, if you get one, bonds to you if you give it enough time. Cons: Will poop wherever it wants, needs attention, can bite, doesn't live as long as a dog or cat.

Cat: Pros: Can be very loving and loyal, and fun to play with. Cons: Can be very independent, you have to clean up their litter box, can live up to 20 years.

Dog: Pros: VERY loving and loyal and playful, loves to jump and run and play. Cons: Depending upon the breed, can take a while to mentally mature, needs house training, can have certain breed specific defects, and chewing.

Rodents: Pros: Fun to play with, easy to care for. Cons: more litter to clean, hard to catch if untrained. **Some are nocturnal...only wanting to do things at night...and make keep you awake from all the noise in their house.

Hope this helps.

If you're going for a dog.. I'm a fan of Pets.yahoo.com They have a pet selector there.. Its to see what kind of dog would fit your lifestyle the best.. There are questions that you answer as far as what kind of housing you have, if you'd be willing to brush hair everyday ect.... its very thorough and it will give you a list of dogs to consider for your environment and hours spent at home, things of the sort... I used it way back when and I would recommend it to anyone! Just know that its a life time comittment to have an animal.. Working at a vet's office, I see far too often what happens when people get sick of having something so dependant. Also a good place to check is your local animal shelter, the dogs there are on borrowed time.. THe one's who are not adopted do get euthanized...

Good luck choosing, and have fun!

Dogs are really nice to have and they make you feel safe. They are loyal to their owners. However, I'm more of a cat person. The choice is up to you. If you really don't want a lot of maintenance for an animal....fish work best.

don't get a pet unless you are ready for a 15 year or more commitment. Food, walks, damage to your home, vet bills, hair everywhere, boarding costs. I love my dog, but I only thought of the good stuff when I bought him.

Personally, I think you should get a cat. They make great companions. But really, you should get a pet that suits you, that fits your lifestyle.
