Well the surface water become polluted by many pollutants released in the lakes, oceans. eg sewage pipes in some areas. Also some industrial waste that is released into waters without being treated. Now some chemicals and compounds as you know are heavier and sink to the bottom where they seep into the ground and mix with the ground water. This happens a lot in agriculture where the fertilizers seep into the ground and affect the ground water table.

E appears to be correct. However, let me tell you that here in the gold country of CA, we have added pollution with the residue from hardrock mines[cyanide]. We also have a problem with dust and water runoff from geological rock formations such as serpentine.[asbestos]. Crushed serpentine has been used for earthfill in new housing tracts and for playgrounds at schools and parks, etc. As you can imagine new laws have been put into effect to govern the use of serpentine. My house is on layers of serpentine. There is nothing that I can do about. If I tried to sell, disclosure laws would bring it to mind.
