We, human beings, have named all the things in our experience - from plants to food and even each other. Are all these names a mere social contruct to help us make sense of our world, or do they convey a deeper meaning than we care to think about?

Firstly I'd say both. Of course they are a social construct so that, we can get on with our lives without going can you pass me the thing, no not that thing the other thing etc etc.

But if you look at the names of things they aren't always just to describe what they are, we are sentimental creatures, that name things out of a love for them. We might not know why a spanner is a spanner and not called a whistle, but someone chose that name for that object for a subjective reason.

Which goes for our names. I don't know how my parents managed to pick such a perfect name for me, it doesn't just suit me, it describes me. My name is Rosie, and I have Rosie cheeks, red hair and people say that I have a Rosie personality, well I am always laughing. Perhaps I've adapted to my name, I don't know, i just find it strange.

I think a name can make someone change, a name is a label. Think about it, what would a child called devil turn out? It would always have people putting negative connotations to their name. Although I say this, I know a little girl called Grace, and she has non! It didn't work for her!

Names are a part of language. Aside from pointing and making odd noises to get attention to what we want, how else would we communicate without names?
