Ipods and Zen Micros are definetely the best. I'll list the pros and cons of each for you.
Ipod:
Pros
Well known of (many more accesories like skins for it)
Some people think that they look nicer
Sold more widely
Very simple, easy software
Comes with a 1-year warranty
Cons
Comes in limited colors
Very expensive
Add-ons like voice recorders and speakers are very expensive ($50-$200)
Shorter battery life than other mp3 players
Holds less songs than Zen Micro per gb
the regular ipods (not nano or shuffle) scratch easily
Zen Micro:
Pros
Comes in many colors
Comes with radio and voice recording, both have to be bought seperately for ipods for about $50.
Holds more songs
Much cheaper
longer battery life
Works with other music software like limewire and walmart.com (I'm pretty sure)
Cons
Scratches easily
Almost no covers to buy for it
less heard of
Colors are brighter (I don't know if you like that or not)
I hope this helped you, and good luck making your decision!

Do not buy an IPod. Just because it's the biggest name, doesn't mean it's the best.
I've had experience with all sorts of MP3 players and the best I've ever used was a "Creative Zen Jukebox"
Unlike Ipod, you can use just about any transfer software to get your MP3's on the player (for example: Windows Media Player, Creative Music Player, Real Player, Drag and Drop).
Also, the interface is really nice. In 3 years, it's never crashed on me once and the quality is great, not to mention it's a little bit more than 1/2 the price of an Ipod.
Hope this helps you out.

I have a Sansa Sandisk and although it works well it is hard to find any accessories for it except online. If I could do it again, I would go for the iPod since everything in the world is taylor-made to fit the darn thing.

I have had a lot of good luck with the iPods.... they are spendy but are worth it. Currently own the nano and love it.
Pretty easy to learn the basics on use. Once you get the hang of it they are easy to load with tons of music.
I work out with mine and it has taken a beating but still keeps working like its new out of the box!!
