It is so they can hear the music. They are called monitors. It large venues it is hard to hear yourself. And when you do time the sound travels back you will be behind.

They need to hear themselves to make sure they are on key. It gets loud during shows, so they need a little help.

A lot of the time they use them as a monitor, so that they can hear themselves/their instruments.
