Actually ,it was Cream in 1966. Blind Faith didn't perform until June, 1969.

Update: I just heard on the radio that Eric Clapton was disappointed with their concert performances because he was a perfectionist. Apparently, their fans couldn't tell or didn't care - they thought it was awesome. One other funny fact, Ginger Baker was once mistaken by police as being a protestor outside of one of the concert venues and he was assaulted before the show.

"On June 11 1966, Frank Sinatra was on top of the record charts with
"Strangers in the Night" and this announcement appeared in Melody Maker:

A sensational new 'groups' group' starring Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker is being formed. Top groups will be losing star instrumentalists as a result. Manfred Mann will lose bassist, harmonica player, pianist and singer Jack Bruce; John Mayall will lose brilliant blues guitarist Eric Clapton; and Graham Bond's Organisation will lose incredible drummer Ginger Baker. The group say they hope to start playing at clubs, ballrooms and theatres in a month's time. It is expected they will remain as a trio with Jack as featured vocalist.

Cream was about to be born, and the world of music would never be the same."

My initial answer was going to be The Beatles, but, "Super Group" is defined as being a musical group made up of members already successful in their field, then becoming highly successful as a group. Before The Beatles, each member had little more than local sucess.

So, knowing that, I'll have to say Cream, or Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, as being one of the "first super-groups".

Everybody says the Beatles, etc., too bad that you really don't know the true answer:

Mozart and the Mothers of Invention.......rocking to the piano vibes of that crazy Mozart and his buddies on harpsichord, viola and drums, they were rocking on the weekends.

Of course they did not have MTV in those days they had MBM (Music by Messenger) so it took longer for a group to get the label supergroup, but they did it.

The Beatles even did a song about the period "Roll Over Beethoven"

Actually all kidding aside when you think about it the real first "supergroup" was the Beach Boys.

Probably a toss up between Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, with all the singers having had success previously. Crosby with the Byrds, Stills with Buffalo Springfield, Nash with the Hollies and Young also with Buffalo Sprinfield (and he was in the Mynah Birds with a young Rick James, btw). The other band would be Blind Faith with Ginger Baker and Clapton being with Cream and Stevie Winwood being with The Spencer Davis Group.

Cream is credited with being the first super group. The band consisted of Jack Bruce on the bass and vocals, Eric Clapton on guitar and vocals, and Ginger Baker on drums and backing vocals. Their albums are Fresh Cream, Wheels Of Fire, Disraeli Gears, and Goodbye.

I would have thought it was The Rolling Stones or The Beatles but I am not sure of the dates they started out.

Although the link takes excpetion with my opinion.
Blind Faith was:
