I picture them as women who don't want to be dependent on a man. Which is cool by me, but I also want my woman to have a vulnerable side that DOES need me in some respects.

Someone that is confident about herself.

I only date independent women (believe me, there are lot out there).
They enjoy a drink as much as me, have as much money as me (they always pay their way) and want sex as much as me.
I love equality.
And yes, I'm as shallow as a lot of modern women.

no. to me it just means she lives alone and takes care of everything in her life pays all of her bills and lives life by her rules only. with or without kids.
