BTW I didn't mean to stereotype teenagers, I was just chatting to my nephew, who's 15,and he said that people always give him and his friends dirty looks when they walk past them in the street. So it made me ask the question.

It does to me, as because I am a teenager as well and I am often seen as a target. There're a lot of people who will be mean.
I think it is fair enough to be wary when you're alone, likely to be a target and around a large group, so long as it's based on the facts (as it is ,as I and my friends have been targets in the past.) There're some people who get too worried and think that all teenagers will hurt them which is unfair.

Worry is a result of some expectations. Whenever we expect something, we open ourselves to be disappointed. The fact of walking is what I am doing. I am heading to a destination. The fact that teenagers, more than one, are walking toward me means nothing. If anything, some of the teens will speak when passing, so I always want to be respectful and kind, and am alert to have a nice comment no matter what I may hear.
On the other hand, being alert and being aware is part of common sense today. Just because a group of teens are walking, I never start by expecting a problem, so I usually get what I expect, no big deal.

Yes, not really in case i was attacked because I know how to defend myself or get out of there but the legal problems bother me.
I am 21, in the eyes of the law if I was attacked by a gang of 14 year olds and I defended myself i could get arrested and charged because self defence doesn't work when you are attacking a minor. Most of the kids know that people over 18 can't do anything to them and it makes them cockier and more aggressive. A lot of it has to do with your word against theirs and it just looks bad if you're "picking" on these kids despite the situation. So i'm not worried about them personally, I usually jsut walk past and ignore them if they call out or something. But I'm rendered defenseless by the law if they were to threaten me or someone I am with and that bothers me a lot.

Not me but I live in Maine. There's not a lot of random violence involving teenagers around here so there's almost always nothing to worry about.
I was attacked by a teenager when I lived in Mass. I kicked his @ss and he called the cops. There were witnesses that said it was self defense so there were no charges against me. They wanted to take the kid in for assault but I said forget it.I didn't call them.
You do have the right to defend yourself. Even from a ten year old with a bat.
