Ive heard that some have high risks and other have low risks, what is the difference and is this risk - still visible on the offenders register the police keep. What happens if they rehabiliate? Do they get taken off the register?

Yes sex offenders, in fact all ofenders, are catergorised according to risk. The risk factors include the seriousness of the crime and takes into account any previous similar offences. The risk is always visible on Police and Probation records and while they are on Probation they are under supervision of the Public Protection Team and are on a high intensity supervision and they have to report several times a week including loads of home visits. If they commit a further crime or fail to report to Probation they are sent back to prison.
In regards to the register it depends. If the court have ordered that they be on the Sex Offenders Register for life then they will stay on there for life regardless of whether they are rehabilitated or not.

No. They get categorized by how much political attention they attract. Fathers who hug their kids before bedtime are as high a risk as people like John Evander Couey. It depends on how much the news jumps on it.

The word is out to state legislatures that sex offenders cannot and will not rehabilitate. That is what child protection workers tell state legislatures and the theory is that it is better not even to try.

Some states do not allow sex offenders names to be disclosed to the public. Some allow sex offenders names to be disclosed to the police. Some states do not allow sex offenders names to be disclosed on line. It depends on the laws in your state where you live.

Hope the link below helps.

The system is absolutely horrible, especially in states such as mine(Pennsylvania) where one can be convicted of a Sex Offense for shoplifting pornography. Its absolutely ridiculous, and I do not like it. I used to be very indifferent to the matter, that was until one of my best friends since childhood was convicted on a bogus charge and is now on a f***ing website with his name and picture listed directly parallel to convicted child rapists. Its horrible. The problem is that, at this point, there is not enough categorizing of said offender. I know that I usually fall a little to the right on the political spectrum, most of the time, but in this case I believe that without the proper methodology being utlilized, the entire process is nothing short of cruel and unconstitional.

SOME but not ALL States do a risk assessment on sex offenders. Also, SOME but not all states offer sex offender treatment therapy while incarcerated. The states that do have a lower recidivism rate than the states that don't. Also, no one teaches PREVENTION of Sexual Abuse. This should be a number one priority. You need to educate yourself and your children to the FACTS. You need to teach your children good touch/bad touch. You need to teach that they are to tell a parent, teacher, counselor or someone if ANYONE touches them inappropriately. At the same time you need to teach them to NOT touch someone inappropriately as there are children as young as 6 years of age on the registry in KY.

Depends on the state. Typically there are different categories of sexual offenders based on the type of crime, age of the victim etc.

Yes! But those who categorize often know little about sexual offenders, or how to tell an offender from a predator!

yes it is, on paedophiles they have a "grading system" that is based on how severe the offence is and how damaging the offence is... for example a sex offender with pictures of toture and rape (how pleasant) will be graded higher than lesser sadistic and sick pictures etc...

All convicted criminals are categorised that way, and the category decides in what kind of prison they will be kept.
