In my life time it has to be Jimmy Carter. He got little respect being a humble peanut farmer but he cared for All Americans regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation more than any racist republicans has.

FDR????
He's the reason why we have Social Security (which is a ponzi scheme); took the country off the gold standard; allowed deficits in the budget; began socialist income redistribution; the disasterous New Deal; created government control of the economy; allowed Hitler to run rampant in Europe until he was almost too powerful to defeat; and sent Japanese citizens to interment camps.
Oh yeah, FDR sounds compassionate, all right. Sure he does.

I assume that most of your answers will say Abe Lincoln, however I think that FDR ranks right up there. He took a nation that was in a deep depression and made jobs for people so they could feed their families. He tried to keep us out of WW2 until we were forced in by Japan and Germany. And his wife Eleanor deserves to be right with him as she did much to help.

Carter was compassionate. Lousy president, but compassionate.
