I'm running Windows XP Home.

incase this might cause you problems later....goto start>>programs>>accessories>>system tools>>backup...click on emergency repair disk (this will make a backup disk with boot files).
cons: must have floppy disk, furthermore most pcs dont come with floppy drives no more.
alternative: use windows xp cd and run repair program.

Well that depends, if it was caused by a virus, yes. If it was done by Windows itself then no. But, Windows usually doesn't do those things so... I'd check for a virus.

It could also be a nasty piece of spyware also.

It is a big concern.

Did it tell you anything else, or just that it changed?

There is very little reason anything would do that outside of a virus.
