Firstly, I don't agree with the comments that I've heard on radio and television that Americans don't like soccer because it's low scoring. Hockey is relatively popular and they love it here. I just think it hasn't been of interest until only recently and it will take time to take on. We are the only country who really don't have the majortity of the population that are into the world's most watched sporting event in the world! (And this is not across the board - but American soccer viewers are a still a minority who diligantly watches the game - so no flamers please - I watch ALL the games and I am American)

I think Americans will get interested in World Cup for a few reasons:
1. Only the younger generation plays it - You will probably see increasing interest in the generation that is ages 2-25. I'm older than that, but loved the game since I was a kid!
2. I also think that many immigrant families and their children watch the game. I think this is where I fall into.
3. Also, will depend on how USA will perform in present and future world cups!

It's a third world country sport. LOL No seriously it is catching on more and more every year. I say by 2025 it will be the 4th most popular sport behind baseball. 1. Football, 2. Basketball, 3. Baseball, 4. Soccer, 5. Golf, 6. Hockey. Oh and I almost forgot we also suck really bad at it. That's probably the main reason.

Possibly because it is not the most dominant sport in the US. They is a host of other sports they play in the US and they probably do not want to do something that is very favoured by majority of the world. Although most of the games they supposedly invented are suprisingly very similar to already existing games. ie American Football-Uncanningly similar to rugby, Baseball- Unquestionably similar to Cricket.....

Because they SUCK at soccer, for all you normal people - FOOTBALL. They only like their own sports: rugby(they call that football), basketball, baseball... They don't want to admit that they're chickens.

that's because America and Canada don't have good players and Americans and Canadians don't really like football(soccer)

Here's one theory:

Baseball: Invented in America
(American) Football: Invented in America
Basketball: Invented in America (I think -- at least popularized...)

Soccer: Not invented in America.

I guess we just like our own sports better :-)

personally, i just don't like soccer that much. and i think with all the tension between the countries, people aren't as interested in watching them play each other. there were fewer people watching the last olympics too.
