#7 the long horns
No. 7: No Vince, but talent abounds for Longhorns
Texas is coming off its fourth national title, a perfect 13–0 season and a 41–38 Rose Bowl win over USC. The Trojan defense didn’t have an answer for Vince Young, and now Young is gone. But let’s not forget that the Longhorns would have been a great team even without him.
When Ryan Perrilloux jilted Mack Brown and Company on Signing Day 2005, he left the Horns in a predicament at quarterback for 2006, and Young’s departure for the pros with a year of eligibility left didn’t help matters. Brown probably will turn to a true freshman — Parade All-American Jevan Snead — at quarterback. Colt McCoy paid his dues as a freshman last year, running the scout team while redshirting, and provides a sound backup plan.
Jamaal Charles is back at tailback after netting 878 yards at an eye-popping 7.4 per carry, with 11 touchdowns. And he accomplished this while sharing starting duties with Selvin Young, who also returns with 2,104 career all-purpose yards under his belt. Ramonce Taylor tied Vince Young for the team-high with 12 touchdown runs last year, averaging 6.8 per carry. Taylor will also see time at wide receiver, having caught 27 passes, three for scores, in ’05. Speaking of wide receivers, Limas Sweed, Billy Pittman and Quan Cosby all return after combining for 85 catches with 12 touchdowns and 18.4 yards per grab.
The Longhorns always can boast some of the most formidable lines in the game. All-America tackle Justin Blalock anchors the O-Line heading into the 2006 campaign. On defense, ends Brian Robison and Tim Crowder, who combined for 24 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks last fall, and tackle Frank Okam all return to their starting assignments, along with enviable depth. Michael Griffin led the national champions in tackles from his safety spot, and is a steadying influence in the back seven.
Texas’ title defense gets an early test on Sept. 9, when Ohio State comes to Austin. After that, it’s clear sailing until the Red River Shootout on Oct. 7 and trips to Nebraska and Texas Tech later in the month.
My pick: Second in the Big 12 South
Returning starters
5 offense, 7 defense, no kickers
And counting
Texas now enjoys the nation’s longest winning streak at 20 games.
Beating the best
The 2005 Longhorns defeated three teams ranked in the Top 10 at the time the games were played — No. 1 USC, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 10 Texas Tech.
Can’t top this
Texas has posted the best record in Division I-A over the last five years at 56–8.

No votes for Auburn?? Though the OOC schedule is week but not as week as last year or the year before the home games that we have will send the team to the higher levels of the chart. Most polls have tem in 9th or 10th already. Another perfect season is very plausable.......
