Is the water crystal clear and blue like the picutes? What are some fun, family-oriented things to do? My family and I are going at the end of next month.

The water is nice but not as crystal or clear as on some other locations. If you take a boat out to the other islands you will find nicer beaches. We took a really cool snorkeling excursion ... some of our impressions are below:

It's crowded, but everyone waits for the sunset in Key West. Anyone will be able to tell you where to go for it and there are street performers who are there every night for this occasion. Yes, the the water is beautiful. If you are driving from Miami, stop by Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key (mid-way between Miami and Key West) and you can have an encounter with the dolphins. It's very hot in the summer so instead of walking all over the place, take the Conch Train tour--it's not really a train, but more like a tram on wheels. Have fun!

Yes, the water is beautiful. If you are flying into Key West, you'll get a great view from the air. However, it is a very pretty drive through all the keys.

For fun, the sunset festival in Mallory Square is a good activity. There's so many street performers and many people come out to watch the sunset.

There's parasailing, snorkeling, boat cruises. There's also shopping! Walk down and check out the Southern Most Point. Relax by your hotel pool or go to the beach.

I grew up in Florida, and have been to the Keys. They are absolutely beautiful. However, if you have kids, you probably don't want to spend much time in Key West. What we did is go camping on Big Pine Key (great camp grounds, and the weather is gorgeous, of course.) and make a day trip to Key West, just to take a look around. We really liked it, but had little kids at the time. We thought it would not be a good place to bring kids. The culture is not only gay, gay, gay, but it's all about sex and partying. You'll see all sorts of weirdos walking in the streets. It's lots of drunk gay people, looking for hook-ups. Like a gay spring break. Really, don't plan your trip around Key West. Take the kids out on a boat trip where they can snorkle and have a picnic on a deserted island. It will be really fun. Make sure you use lots of sunblock and hats and sunglasses, and wear t-shirts when you have a bathing suit on.

I have lived there. Bahia Honda State Park is where you want to go for some nice clear water, it's up the keys. Key West doesn't really have very good beaches, since it is overdeveloped. Don't focus on just Key West, check out the other islands..Stay away from Stock Island...it's right before you get to Key West..It's not a very safe place. Make sure you check out the Hemingway house, and Sloppy Joe's..There's LOTS to do there..You won't be disappointed. Yes there is a thriving "gay" community there, but they're very harmless. Key West is a very "hippy" type of place. Don't be surprised if you see people wearing tie dye, patchouli, and Birkenstock. Key West high has a great giant conch shell (school mascot) you can take some nice photos in front of..I enjoyed living there, but living on an island does tend to grow old after a while. You can get some great seafood there, just do yourself a favor and order some Key Lime Pie for desert. Oh Key West has "protected" chickens, it is illegal to hurt them. When you're driving down there, be careful of the Key deer, they're endangered. Bring lots of sunscreen, and enjoy!~smiles

Bahia Honda State Park is MUCH cheaper than a boat excursion..if you want to save some money that is...

If you have kids, they can look for seahorses and tiny crabs in the seaweed. Just use a bucket to scoop up the seaweed and then examine it to see if you caught anything.

Watch out for stingrays (on remote beaches)they like hiding under the sand, sometimes you can make out their outlines. Their sting hurts really bad. Also watch out for jelly fish.

key west is awesome. Do make sure that you go to the Aquarium. It's inexpensive and informative. Also go to Zachary Taylor for the beach. Make sure that you go to the sunset show on Mallory Square and make sure you see the catman and his amazing cats performing for the sunset celebration. He's right behind the hilton.
