I read an old proverb the other day that stated
"The mouth has no choice but to speak that which fills the heart."

You can tell a lot from a person by their speech and the things they habitually talk about. Does this proverb ring true for you? If so, what do you find yourself speaking of these days?

Thank you for asking such a wonderful and enlightening question!!!
I like to talk about the magic of life and take great delight in all the "connections" I see that are outside the realm of the five physical senses.
In my life I've also noticed that whatever I not only talk about but think about, is usually what plays out in my day to day activities. When I think dark thoughts....I have dark days......the more I think and talk about joy, peace and love (Agape type)....the more that comes into my life! No kidding!
There's another old proverb.....whatsoever a man thinks.....so he is.

I suppose it could! I think that in talking with me one would surmise that I am an "older woman" that has lived a very diverse and full life.I can be as comfortable all dressed up for a ball as I am in jeans and sneakers.I am capable of quickly adjusting to the environment surrounding me.I can speak of motherhood and parenting or just the opposite( as a person desiring to conceive to one that doesn't want children at all)I've lived in the hills of Kentucky without the modern conveniences.I've lived in big cities with all the comforts.I've traveled the world. I can be timid and shy,yet I have the confidence to perform on a stage in front of large groups of people. There isn't much I haven't done, there are only a few things I wouldn't try at least once! Life is for living and I intend to live it at it's fullest! I can converse with the youngest the oldest and anyone in between. I find myself speaking of a very wide range of topics these days!

I don't agree with it for the most part. People are very good at putting on public personas and what we think we know about them could be the farthest thing from who they really are (e.g. why neighbors are shocked when someone in their community is arrested for a heinous crime).

Personally, I NEVER discuss my personal life at work and usually not online either. Therefore, the things I discuss are work-related and/or general enough to make good water-cooler banter, but nothing else.

I also know people who NEVER talk to their own spouse about their innermost feelings. Some people only reserve that for their therapists of friends over a drink or two. Again, their usual audience would probably have a very different viewpoint of who they are.

Bottom line, is, I don't believe it's right or fair to judge people based on what we think we know about them - regardless of what they say or don't say. Nobody ever has the WHOLE story or anything close to it. We, as a society, need to stop looking for "clues" to label people.

So, now this question has proven somewhat true for me. What's on my heart right now is advocacy and tolerance.

I would say that it usually rings true for me, yes. I wear my "heart on my sleeve", as the saying goes, so I've always been unable to hide my emotions or what I'm feeling inside. I'm extremely transparent when it comes to what's going on inside of me. Today, I've been alone thus far, and have only been "talking" with someone online. I have been in a bit of a pensive mood today, and am quite sure, unfortunately so, that my feelings were coming through all too clearly in my conversation today. I am usually a very upbeat person, and can easily talk about whatever I'm thinking about at that particular moment. I also know that for me, my feelings or emotions can usually be read simply from by body language. I've always been extremely animated, especially when I'm excited about something, or want to share something with another person, so it's very easy to tell what mood i'm in as a rule, without me uttering a single word! :)

Good question, Linty. Have you met Patzky99, by any chance? Your Q&A reminds me very much of his and I feel sure you two are kindred spirits. This is an entirely good thing for the discourse at Yahoo! Answers. Welcome.

In answer to your question (which has already received several excellent responses), though I'm not generally a fan of proverbs, yes, this one very much rings true for me. Like Caroline, I wear my heart on my sleeve and am otherwise an open book. If you know me well, you can likely tell my mood at a glance. If not, I'll soon tell you.

Although a very private person, I dislike secrecy and subterfuge. I like open, honest and genuine people who are unafraid to express themselves and their true feelings. This is exactly how I conduct myself, and yes, it can cause friction and get me into trouble on occasion. But I'm fine with that. I'd much rather people judged me by who I am than by some sort of conjuring trick. I am very definitely a straight shooter.

So what's on my mind these days? Well, I'm not going to delve into my personal life (privacy issues, remember?) but I can tell you that I'm planning my summer holiday. I am also seriously getting into the World Cup (Come on, England!) and discuss the topic daily with both my brothers and my friends (and even in YA). The crimes and misdemeanors of the bush administration are always a hot topic with me and my circle. Family matters, friends' issues, current events, books, films and music I'm enjoying at present, all the usual suspects are percolating in my restless mind, as ever. I think that about covers it. Thanks for asking.

yeah I believe it's true. the bible reiterates the thought many times. Jesus said "what goes into the mouth will be expelled, but what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart." or something along those lines.

my confusion is...what is the heart? the bible speaks very distinctly between heart, soul, and mind. I don't know what's what. I don't think my physical heart holds thoughts or feelings in it, I have no clue what my soul is capable of, and my mind appearently isn't everything I thought it was.

theres a lot of women here. it's making me nervous.

Yes, also to add to that is a verse in the bible "Out of the mouth, the heart speaks." How else can we express what we feel inside but by our actions and words, especially? Now, I`m thinking of the dinner I just had. Pasta with pesto.

Doesn't that paraphrase the Christ "Out of the heart's abundance the mouth speaks?" I find myself expressing my gratitude often lately--that must be what I am thinking about.
